It’s so nice to hear from viewers who saw the film. Broadcast is strange that way. You know that thousands and thousands of people are seeing it but have no idea what it means to them. We love it when people wrote. One man’s mother was from Wloclawek, Anna Jacobs’ hometown and he wanted to know if they knew each other. Sure enough, they did. They even spent summers at the same bungalow colony in the Catskills back in the Sixties. Another person wrote: “…I decided to watch. What a lovely, touching, pleasant surprise. I was moved and not only wished I could meet Anna Jacobs, but also wanted to be a part of your beautiful family. You were able to impart the horrors of the holocaust without going into graphic details. You were able to show the strength and wisdom of your mom in such a short period of time. The tears were rolling down my eyes and I wanted you to find your uncle so badly.
What a wonderful way to spend thirty minutes on a Sunday afternoon.”

Both papers chose Finding Kalman as critic picks for this week. Today’s listing was in the NY Post. Sunday it was in the Daily News. It’s great that the film is getting this recognition. I hope the broadcasts touch people’s hearts. Today I met with folks from the Hagedorn Foundation and the Suffolk Center for the Holocaust, Diversity and Human Understanding out in Port Washington. They are trying to raise awareness of immigration issues and working with high schools to stop hate crimes. A group of high school athletes beat and killed an Ecuadorean immigrant named Marcelo in the “quiet” suburban town of Patchogue a few years ago. His brother Joselo has been telling his story in schools with the hope of opening people’s eyes and minds. I hope we’ll find a way to work together.

Finding Kalman is airing nationally on public television stations and on WORLD, the 24/7 multicast channel featuring public television’s best documentary, nature and news programming, throughout April 2013.

If you’re not aware of World, it is part of PBS and is available across the country. Check your local listings and there’s a good chance you can find a broadcast of Finding Kalman in March or April. Why so many broadcasts now? April 8th is Yom Hashoah. It is a day set aside to remember the victims of the Holocaust. Find more information about how you can participate in a meaningful remembrance activity at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum website.

In this photo four friends who survived the Holocaust relax at a pool in Wielun, Poland in 1945. After WWII, Anna returned to her husband’s hometown of Wielun. Avram,a good friend of theirs who also survived the camps was tragically murdered one night after returning to his family’s mill. Anna warned him not to stay there, but he wanted to spend just one more night to gather his possessions. Amazingly, we rediscovered a picture of Avram yesterday, which brought tears to the eyes of his 92 year-old mother Esther. Avram is in the middle. On the right is Itzik Zelkovich. Hear Anna tell the story by going to youtube: http://youtu.be/lQo8lssf2Kk
